In this session, James (Jim) Haw, Vice-President of Automation and Digital Strategy at Operations Technology Specialists (OTS), will address a key topic: Digital Cognition versus Digital Twins. With over 35 years of industrial automation experience and a proven track record of innovation, Jim will emphasize that the complexities of digital cognition are not as challenging as often portrayed. He will argue that digital twins don’t need to be intricate or overly complex; rather, they should be simple, continually used, and focused on driving value for clients. 

Jim will share his experience from pioneering the first “born digital” plastics recycling facility, an achievement that earned him the 2023 ISA Excellence in Technical Achievement award. He will explain why it’s not the complexity of the digital twin that matters, but rather the simplicity and consistent utilization that lead to success. Jim’s approach emphasizes that overly complex programs often benefit developers more than clients, and that in-house personnel, armed with the right tools, can effectively manage digital strategies and drive real value.
