ABOUT THE SESSION

Brad Carlberg will delve into the concept of the Autonomous Process Plant, which operates with minimal human intervention through a Digital Twin that merges Process and Control Models. The session will cover optimization techniques ranging from basic PID to advanced APC and MPC methods. Essential elements such as smart sensors for data collection, rigorous asset maintenance, and secure communications for data transfer between plant floors and control systems will be discussed. The session will highlight how a Digital Twin serves as a dynamic virtual plant model, addressing design deficiencies and transforming the process design for optimal production and profitability.

Key Topics:

  • The Autonomous Process Plant: A plant that runs itself with little or no human intervention utilizing a Digital Twin coupling the Process Model with the Control Model.
  • Optimization of the plant using various control methods: basic regulatory (PID), advanced regulatory (Cascade, Ratio, Feedforward), Advanced Process Control (APC), and Model Predictive Control (MPC).
  • The role of smart sensors and instruments in reliably collecting data, and the importance of maintaining plant assets such as instrumentation & electrical systems, pumps, and valves.
  • The development of the Autonomous Process Plant following the path of autonomous vehicles, including secure and robust communication methods to move data between the mill floor and control systems.
  • Software and human expertise to combine equipment data, DCS data, and ERP data to optimize production and profitability.
  • The Digital Twin: A dynamic model of a physical object, combining form and functional models to optimize operation and design of the process.
  • How the Digital Twin changes process design, corrects design deficiencies, and improves communication between engineering disciplines through a centralized database.
