In-person on-demand session
Targeting a greener, more efficient containerised commodity supply chain
ABOUT THE SESSION
Fergus Eley, a seasoned commercial leader with two decades of international experience, is committed to advancing low-emission solutions across global supply chains. At BHP, he drives maritime and supply chain excellence by integrating digital transformation and energy transition strategies to optimize operations and reduce environmental impact. He will share his views on how the containerized commodity supply chain can become greener and more efficient, focusing on scalable infrastructure innovations, decarbonization strategies, and the role of data-driven technologies in achieving sustainability goals. His session will spotlight practical pathways for industry-wide transformation toward a cleaner, more resilient logistics future.
He will share his views on how BHP leverages global shipping liners to move around 50,000 TEUs annually, transporting critical commodities like copper, nickel, and uranium, while also importing essential goods for mining operations. As one of the world’s largest dry bulk charterers, BHP is actively engaged in decarbonizing maritime supply chains—investing in LNG-fuelled Newcastlemax vessels, trialing biofuels, and exploring wind-assist technologies. Fergus will highlight BHP’s ambition to deepen connections within the containerized freight ecosystem and promote emissions reduction through innovation. He will also discuss the importance of data-democratization in driving sustainable transformation across fuels, fleet technologies, and strategic partnerships.
Key Topics-
1. BHP uses global shipping liners to move some 50,000 TEUs annually – shipping commodities such as copper, nickel and uranium to customers around the world, and importing all the goods and materials that our Mining Assets require. More broadly BHP is one of the world’s largest dry bulk charterers, and our Maritime team works across all sectors of the maritime industry, including container freight.
2. We are passionate about decarbonising the world’s maritime supply chains having recently procured 5 Newcastlemax LNG-fuelled bulkers, conducting biofuels trials with our industry partners, and investigating wind-assist technology on the fleet that moves our commodities.
3. Out ambition is to build deep connections within the containerised freight ecosystem and along the end-toend commodity supply chain to target emissions reduction and efficiency improvements leveraging emerging technologies and solutions.
4. We believe that data-democritisation is a key enabler to decarbonising our end-to-end supply chains. We think about this in three areas – future fuels, onboard/supply chain innovations and our partnering/chartering choices.
