ABOUT THE SESSION

Tom Ralston, the Digital Process Engineering Business Development Lead at MySep Pte Ltd. With a strong background in process engineering software, Tom is driving digitalization in the oil and gas industry. In this blog, we’ll dive into his insights on the essential role of rigorous separation modeling in realizing the value of digitalization for oil and gas production.

Tom Ralston had shared his views on the significance of digitalization in the oil and gas industry. He highlighted how crucial it was to make the most of existing facilities because discovering new sources had become increasingly difficult and costly. Ralston explained that digitalization, which involved utilizing advanced tools like sensors and computer models, played a pivotal role. He provided an illustrative example of a typical medium-sized oil and gas facility. Initially, they gathered extensive data about its operations and then created a digital replica on a computer, akin to a video game. Their focus was on a critical component known as “separation,” which helped extract oil and gas from other substances. Using this computer model, they experimented to improve the separation process without impacting real-world operations. This approach not only saved costs but also enhanced efficiency, a critical factor considering the rising global demand for energy. In summary, Tom Ralston underlined the necessity of employing digital tools to refine processes and maximize the potential of existing resources in the oil and gas industry.

Key topics:

  • Oil & gas production expansion opportunities from existing assets have never been more imperative
  • A case study is presented, based on a mid-scale production facility. The key steps in providing a digital twin of suitable fidelity are set out
  • Optimization of the process is shown to depend on modelling the potential for retro-fit upgrade of separation equipment
